Helander Dance Theater to present Petrol. Premiere to ask Audience to "Pay What it is Worth"
What is art worth to you? How much does our society value art making and art makers? Is the role of artists in our culture important enough that they receive sufficient support to devote themselves to their craft?
Helander Dance Theater will ask the audience to ponder these questions at the premier of their spring performance, Petrol: An Evening of Dance, Theater and Video Fueled by Life’s Awkward Transitions, on April 3rd-6th at the Dairy Center for the Arts.Those attending the show will be asked to pay for the show after the performance and will be asked to consider what value the evening's performance had for them.
Danelle Helander has led HDT for over 27 years, making it Boulder's longest continuously performing dance company, providing Boulder dance audiences with well-crafted, thought-provoking performances featuring multi-faceted artistry and striking choreography. They have been a resident organization of the Dairy Center for the Arts since 1994. In developing the approach to the premiere of Petrol, Helander Dance Theater wanted, in this era of file sharing, You Tube, media and entertainment saturation, to make explicit the question of the value people place on art in their lives. Those attending the premiere will be given an envelope and asked to make an anonymous donation after the show. The company hopes that this will provide them the opportunity to stop and reflect on the importance of creativity in their lives and society.
Petrol is a multi-media performance revolving around our fuel ups, break downs, and the mileage accumulated along the way. Helander Dance Their Spring 2008 season expands on the company's strong theatrical sense, while offering the spiraling, momentum-filled modern dance that is intrinsic to HDT.

Danelle was given the role of Ambassador during HDT’s Sister Cities tour within Tajikistan, Nicaragua, Japan and Tibet collaboration with the University of
Colorado and the Mali Assistance Project allowed HDT to use performance as a vehicle for providing needed supplies to Mali villages. The company has also partnered with Global Response to resolve an oil drilling issue in Costa Rica. In performance, HDT is eclectic, dramatic, sometimes whimsical & always thought provoking.
